STD Testing Q & A

What is a sexually transmitted disease?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are very common. Aside from the cold and flu, STDs are the most common contagious infections in the United States, with millions of new cases each year.

STDs may cause serious health problems, affecting your fertility in some cases. While many STDs can be treated, some STDs cannot be cured. The team at Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare offers onsite STD testing, so you can get timely treatment to protect your health.

How are STDs spread?

STDs are spread by contact during vaginal, oral, and anal sex. You can have an STD and not have any symptoms, which is why it’s important to get STD tests on a regular basis.

What are the types of STDs?

STDs come in many different forms. Here are the most common ones:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Herpes
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
  • Trichomoniasis

Hepatitis B also can be spread during sexual intercourse.

What is STD testing?

Depending on which type of STD you’re being tested for, you may need a blood test, urine test, or swab test. Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare offers STD testing in an onsite lab for your convenience.

Here are examples of how a variety of STD tests are performed:

  • Chlamydia: Urine sample of a genital swab
  • Syphilis: Blood test or sample of a sore
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV): Blood test
  • Gonorrhea: Genital swab or urine sample
  • HIV: Swab inside of your mouth or blood test
  • Genital herpes: Blood test, if you have no symptoms

If you have symptoms of genital herpes, your provider will take a swab of the sore for STD testing. Once your test results come back, your provider recommends the right course of treatment based on your diagnosis.

How are STDs treated?

Several STDs, including gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia, are treated by taking antibiotics. If your lab tests come back negative for HPV, your provider may recommend getting the HPV vaccine Gardasil®9. Gardasil is available for teens and adults up to age 45.

With convenient onsite STD testing, Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare helps to safeguard your health and well-being. Call today or schedule a consultation online.
