Mammogram Q & A

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is a screening test to look for changes in your breast tissue. A mammogram allows your doctor to catch breast cancer early and identify other possible issues that affect your health.

Mammograms use low-dose X-rays to create digital images of structures inside your breasts. Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare offers mammograms onsite and refers you to specialists for additional care, as necessary.

What are the types of mammograms?

You’ll typically undergo a screening mammogram or diagnostic mammogram. Your doctor advises you about which type you need. Sometimes you need both.

Screening mammogram

Looks for signs of breast cancer by taking pictures of each breast from at least two different angles. This type of mammogram is generally recommended when you don’t have any breast symptoms or problems.

Diagnostic mammogram

A more extensive mammogram performed when your doctor observes certain breast symptoms during a screening mammogram. This type of mammogram often involves taking images of your breast from additional angles.

What happens during a mammogram?

Before your mammogram, you’ll be asked to avoid using lotion or applying deodorant. Both interfere with the scan.

When you arrive at Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare for your mammogram, here’s what you can expect to happen:

  • You undress above the waist and put on a loose gown.
  • You’re escorted to a private room for your mammogram.
  • The technologist positions each breast between plates to take several views of your breasts.
  • The plates compress your breasts for a few seconds.
  • You hold your breath for a few seconds as the technologist takes a series of images.

You can expect your mammogram to take 20 minutes or less.

What does a mammogram show?

Your mammogram shows signs of breast cancer along with other structures and masses. These include:

  • Calcifications: Spots of calcium that sometimes signal an early stage of breast cancer
  • Cysts: Very common, fluid-filled masses that are rarely a sign of cancer
  • Fibroadenomas: A growing mass that your doctor may suggest removing

If you’ve had a mammogram before, your doctor at Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare compares the previous images to the current picture to detect changes.

After your mammogram, your doctor advises you if you require follow-up testing. You may be referred to a facility that provides breast ultrasounds or to a breast specialist.

If you’re due for a mammogram, take charge of your health today by booking a consultation online or calling Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare.
