Women’s Health Q & A

What is a women’s health exam?

A well-woman exam is an annual checkup with your provider at Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare with a focus on preventive care. The goal is to keep you healthy now and in the future.

How do I get ready for a women’s health exam?

Before your appointment, it’s a good idea to write down questions you’d like to ask your provider at Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare. For example, you may have noticed changes in your breasts or menstrual flow. It’s natural to wonder whether the changes are normal.

Here are some of the women’s health topics you might wish to discuss:

  • Contraceptive options
  • Trying to have a baby
  • Infertility counseling
  • Signs of menopause
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Mental health issues
  • Eating healthy and staying active

What happens during an annual exam?

Your provider at Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare takes a complete medical history. You can expect questions about past illnesses or surgeries, current medications you’re taking, your sexual health, and any medical conditions that run in your family.

Your provider discusses which screening tests and follow-up services are right for you. Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare offers onsite lab tests and a range of screening services, including bone density tests and genetic cancer screening.

Next, your provider performs a physical exam. This may include:

  • A Pap smear: Tests for early signs of cervical cancer
  • Pelvic exam: Makes sure your reproductive organs are healthy
  • Breast exam: Checks for unusual growths

Depending on your age, your doctor may refer you to a specialist for a mammogram.

Your women’s health appointment may also include immunizations. Your provider may talk to you about the Gardasil vaccine to prevent human papillomavirus (HPV).

About 79 million Americans are infected with HPV, and each year around 14 million new infections occur. Getting vaccinated reduces your risk of HPV-related cancer and diseases. Gardasil is available for teens and women ages 15-45.

If it’s been a while since you’ve had a checkup and you’d like to learn more about Southern Crescent Women’s HealthCare’s women’s health services, call one of the offices or schedule a consultation online.
